Heriot-Watt University SoTD | Capital Connection

The Brief

Heriot-Watt University’s School of Textiles and Design is based in Galashiels in the Scottish Borders, a hub of innovative design and state-of-the-art technology nestled in the beautiful Borders countryside. ‘Capital Connection’ was commissioned to highlight the ease of connection to Edinburgh, whilst also shining a spotlight on a campus which Dame Vivienne Westwood described as having the ‘Best facilities in the UK’.

The Process

This project required a two-day multi-crew shoot in order to capture all stages of the journey from Edinburgh to Galashiels, including drone footage of a moving train.

An intensive pre-production period involved a pre-shoot recce, location research and liaising with landowners along the route in order to ensure that we had all the permissions needed to fly our drone over the stunning Borders’ scenery. The interiors were shot weeks prior to the exteriors, ensuring that we showed a bustling campus during term time and the Gala scenery in full bloom later in the Spring.

The Result

As well as featuring prominently on the school’s website, the full-length edit is the most-watched video on Heriot-Watt University School of Textile and Design’s Facebook page, helped along by shares from ScotRail, and scores of students, past and present.
