How to make a (Gin) Genius Ad

Author Kat Jordan

Every so often, a project comes along which really allows us to stretch our creative muscles. Our latest TV ad for Caorunn Gin (and their first TVC), currently on air nationwide, is one of those projects. If you haven’t heard of Caorunn, where have you been? Caorunn (pronounced ‘ka-roon’) is a Scottish based Gin maker with a distillery located in Speyside. Global Brand Manager, Gillian Gibson, summarises:

Caorunn Gin truly is a one of a kind gin, from our unique blend of locally foraged botanicals to being the only gin in the world crafted in a working Copper Berry Chamber, ingenuity is at the heart of everything we do and the end result is a well-balanced, crisp, fruity & fresh gin with a deliciously long & dry finish.

After we allowed those creative muscles to do some stretching, our team ventured to Granton-on-Spey to film with Glasgow-based artist Chelsea Frew; a renowned mural artist who has been working with the Caorunn brand for many years. The creative brief saw Chelsea making her journey through the distillery, about to embark on painting a new mural designed to showcase some of the unique steps and ingredients that go into this special gin.

Not an ounce of paint was wasted on the shoot, since the mural you see in the video is actually made up of 1’s and 0’s. The social edit of the film weaves together shots of Chelsea, the distillery and the wall where the mural would be painted through animation, intricately brough to life by director and animator Erik RVA. We like to think a bit of Gin Genius extended to the creation of our tree-growing, botanical picking, apple slicing animation.
